FAQ’s

1. What is freediving and what makes it unique? +
Freediving is a form of underwater diving that relies on breath-holding, allowing divers to explore the underwater world with minimal equipment. Unlike scuba diving, which uses specialized gear to provide air and extend time underwater, freediving relies solely on the diver’s ability to train their body to adapt to the underwater environment. With practice and proper training, divers can extend both the depth they reach and the time they stay submerged, unlocking the potential of the “aquatic mammal” within us all. This practice fosters a natural connection with the ocean and its inhabitants, creating a deeply immersive and harmonious experience.

What makes freediving unique is the way it combines physical and mental discipline with a deep connection to nature. Freedivers often describe it as a meditative experience, requiring relaxation, focus, and mindfulness to optimize breath-holding and performance. Freediving also allows for a silent, streamlined interaction with marine inhabitants, offering a sense of freedom and immersion that feels closer to being part of the ocean. It’s a sport that emphasizes self-awareness, safety, and respect for the underwater environment.
2. Do you teach beginners? Do I need to be a strong swimmer to try freediving? +
Yes! Our FII Level 1 Freediver certificate course is designed for both beginners and experienced divers. It is beginner-friendly and a great introduction to freediving, while also offering valuable skills for those with experience. You don’t need to be an elite swimmer, but you should be comfortable in open water and have basic swimming skills.

Before starting, all students must complete a medical form. If you answer “yes” to any medical questions, a doctor’s approval is required.

Minimum Age: 18+ or 16+ with waiver from both parents/guardians
3. Is freediving safe? What safety measures are in place? +
Freediving is inherently dangerous, and you can never eliminate the risk. However, the risks can be minimized when divers implement proper freediving techniques as well as freediving safety and supervision protocols. Our courses emphasize and teach safety protocols and proper buddy techniques to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
4. What gear do I need for a freediving course? +
The list below is required to participate in the course. While freediving-specific gear is recommended, most scuba gear is acceptable if that’s what you have. However, for the best experience and efficiency in the water, we strongly recommend using freediving-specific equipment.

Required Freediving or Equivalent Gear:
  • Freediving/Spearfishing Mask – A low-volume mask designed for freediving/spearfishing.
  • Snorkel – A simple J-style snorkel without purge valves.
  • Freediving Fins – Long-blade freediving fins (plastic, fiberglass, or carbon).
  • Wetsuit – A two-piece freediving/spearfishing wetsuit with an attached hood (7mm thickness recommended).
  • Weight Belt – A rubber freediving weight belt for a secure fit.
  • Weights – Laced through slotted lead (Coated recommended).
  • Neoprene Socks (Booties) – 5mm recommended.
  • Neoprene Gloves – 5mm most times of the year.
  • Waterproof Watch with stopwatch mode.

Rental Gear Options: I have a fleet of high-quality freedive gear and a limited number of rental packages available on a first-come, first-served basis—if interested, reserve yours as soon as possible. Gear can be rented as a full package or à la carte if you only need specific items. Rental fees can be applied toward the purchase of the rented equipment if purchased within 24 hours of return (excludes lead dive weights).
5. Where do you offer classes / training sessions in Seattle? +
The FII Level 1 Freediver course teaches the fundamentals of freediving. The courses mainly take place in Seattle, WA. The classroom sessions are held in West Seattle, with the in-water portions of the course taking place in the Puget Sound at Seacrest Park or Lake Washington at various dive sites near the I-90 Bridge.

Destination courses, coaching sessions, and experiences are available in Washington on the Olympic Peninsula, various San Juan Islands, and Cascade Alpine Lakes. I also love to travel and am open to ideas! Email ryan@freediveseattle.com to start dreaming up possibilities!
